FOURTEEN

CALLUM

“I’m glad you heard me out and came to reason,” Callum said as Fiona walked through the door.

He shut it behind her, and she turned to face him.

“You made some good points, but overall, it’s for our child.”

“That’s a good enough reason for me.” He smiled. “You’re determined, I’ll give you that. I’m sure you’ll get a promotion in no time with your skills.”

She scoffed. “Yeah, it would have been sooner with the article, but like you said, I need to educate myself. That’s what a good journalist would do, anyway. Plus, I enjoy researching.”

Callum couldn’t help but admire her resolve and professionalism. Despite their initial disagreements, he could see she was a talented journalist.

“Listen, I have some things to finish up from last night,” he said suddenly, an idea coming to mind. “Why don’t I show you my library?”

Fiona raised an eyebrow. “The library?”

He chuckled. “Yes, I have quite an extensive collection of shifter books. It might give you some more insight into our world.”

She grinned. “I guess my research will start now. That would be great.”

Callum led her through the large house toward his one-of-a-kind stash of literary classics.

“One of the girls I came to the first party with spent most of her night in the library,” Fiona admitted as they entered the room. “Truthfully, I was more interested in socializing, so I hadn’t paid much attention. This is really impressive.”

The shelves were lined with books of all sizes and colors. She started by flipping open a thin book on the history of shifters.

As Fiona continued to browse, Callum couldn’t help but watch her with interest. He could see she was genuinely fascinated by the information, and he could almost feel her thirst for knowledge.

He was taking a risk by showing her his proof of shifter existence and sharing more about their world, but a part of him believed in her. He could tell she was sincere in her apology, and he saw how much being a good mother meant to her.

With a sigh, Callum decided to trust her. It could be a bad idea, considering she was a journalist and could break her promise at any moment, but he wanted to believe she wouldn’t.

“So,” Fiona said, breaking the silence between them. “Do you have any recommendations?”

Callum smiled. “I think you would find Shifter Psychology quite interesting.”

Fiona raised an eyebrow. “Shifter psychology? I didn’t know such a thing existed.”

“Oh, it does.” Callum chuckled. “We have our own set of rules and behaviors just like humans do.”

Fiona nodded thoughtfully as she pulled the book from the shelf. She flipped through the pages and began reading about shifter behaviors and emotions.

Callum forced himself to leave and tend to his alpha duties, though his wolf strongly protested.

After all his emails and phone calls had been made, and the house was put back together, he made his way back to the library, eager to visit with Fiona more.

“I can see why you’re so protective of your kind,” Fiona said, glancing up at Callum with newfound understanding.
